Science and Technology Week celebrates advancements in the field of science and technology, as well as the hardworking, dedicated students and professionals who make those advancements possible. Past keynote speakers include television personality Bill Nye, theoretical physicist Brian Greene and more. Science and Technology Week presentations are free and open to the public.

Wrongful Conviction and the ISU Innocence Project
Dr. Dawn Beichner, Department of Criminal Justice Sciences, and co-advisor of the ISU Innocence Project, Dr. John McHale from the School of Communication, will moderate a panel discussion following the showing of a 30-minute documentary "A Matter of Innocence: The Story of Dale Helmig." Richard Helmig and student members of the ISU Innocence Project will serve as the panelists. The presentation will conclude with an opportunity for audience members to ask questions and make comments.

A Conversation with Dr. Sylvia Nasar on Grand Pursuit, her latest book to be released fall of 2006 that chronicles contributions of 20th Century economic thinker's views of the way the world works.

This presentation will be introduced by Dr. Cheryl Elzy, Dean of Libraries and followed by a Q & A with the audience.

Science and Technology Keynote Address - by Sylvia Nasar

Sylvia Nasar was born in Bavaria in 1947 to a German mother and Uzbek father. Her family immigrated to the United States in 1951 and lived in New York and Washington, D.C. before moving to Ankara, Turkey in 1960. In 1965, she returned to the U.S. on her own and attended Antioch College where she majored in literature. She also spent a year at the University of Munich. After working for several years, she entered the Ph.D. program in economics at New York University, completing a master's degree in 1976. For four years, she did research with Nobel Laureate Wassily Leontief at the Institute for Economic Analysis.

At 35, Nasar became a journalist. Since 1983, she has been a writer at Fortune, a columnist at U.S. News & World Report and, until recently, a reporter at The New York Times where she covered economics. She and her husband, Darryl Mcleod, also an economist, have three children, Clara, Lily and Jack, and live in Tarrytown, New York.

A Beautiful Mind , her first book, won the 1998 National Book Critics' Circle Award for Biography, was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in biography, and inspired a feature movie directed by Ron Howard, as well as a PBS television documentary. Nasar, who edited The Essential John Nash , is currently working on a book about 20th century economic thinkers, and has recently been named the first John S. and James L. Knight Professor of Journalism at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.

This lecture is open to the general public including local community, students and faculty. There will be a forty-five minute presentation followed by 15 minutes of Q & A from the College faculty and audience. There will be a book signing in the lobby of Braden Auditorium immediately following the Q & A session.

Wind Power-Winter Crop
Mr. Bob Crowell of Horizon Wind Energy will speak about developments in wind power, from the local to the international level. His presentation will address topics ranging from the Arrowsmith Wind Farm in McLean County to trends in Illinois and U.S. wind power. The international nature of the wind industry will also be discussed. Mr. Crowell is Director of Business Development at Horizon Wind Energy and an ISU Alumnus, with an MBA from ISU's College of Business. He has 20 years of energy experience in the natural gas utility and independent power industries and joined Horizon in 2001.
