Information for Community College Students

The Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI) is a cooperative effort among community colleges and universities in Illinois. The program is designed to assist students in transferring from a community college to a four year university while maintaining credit for courses already completed. As a supporter of the IAI program, ISU is providing the following information to community college students who wish to enter the School of Information Technology at Illinois State University.

The first priority for a students transferring into ISU from a community college is the completion of either an Associates of Science Degree (A.S.) or the Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI) general education courses. The Associates of Science Degree (A.S.) is the preparatory degree for students planning on entering a four year university.  The Associates of Science Degree fulfills the general education requirement at ISU. The Associate’s of Applied Science Degree (A.A.S.) is a terminal degree which does not meet the general education requirements at ISU. Completion of the Associates of Science Degree or the IAI prior to entering ISU will assist the student in completing studies at ISU in a timely fashion.

Within Information Technology at Illinois State, there are three degree programs. The following information will assist students in selecting courses at the community college which may be beneficial to them in completing the general education portion of IAI and offer the student a firm foundation in preparing for study in Information Technology at Illinois State University.  Recommendations do vary for each of our degree programs.

How long will it take to complete my degree at ISU?

The average student transferring from a community college to ISU, who has completed the general education program at the community college will complete the ITK degree requirements at ISU in five (5) semesters.

How many of my courses will transfer to ISU?

Most, if not all courses will transfer to ISU for hours credit.  Some will be applied to specific courses at ISU.  Others will not.  Each student who applies to ISU will receive a “Statement of Transfer Credit” from the Registrar indicating exactly how courses have been credited at ISU.  In addition, the student is invited to follow visit the Registrar's Web site, select the appropriate community college and review Course Articulation Table for each community college.

Our Degree Programs

The Information Systems Degree has two study sequences.  The Analyst sequence is for students interested in designing and or writing computer applications in a business environment.  The Web Development sequence is for students interested in developing applications in the web environment.  This IAI information contained here applies to both study sequences. Our students begin their careers in companies such as State Farm Insurance, Country Companies, John Deere and Caterpillar.

Computer Science –This degree program is for students interested in developing complex types of computer programs. There is an emphasis on math and science within this study sequence. Students may begin their career at companies like Motorola, Boeing or in the Silicon Valley.

Telecommunications Degree – This degree program focuses on the networking aspects of information technology. Our students may begin their careers at companies such as State Farm Insurance, Country Companies, John Deere or Caterpillar
