Mary Elaine Califf is an Associate Professor in the Computer Science area of the School of Information Technology. She teaches primarily programming courses at the beginning and intermediate levels. Her primary research interests are in Artificial Intelligence, particularly in the areas of Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing, and she teaches the School"s Introduction to Artificial Intelligence course. She has also published a few papers on Computer Science Education, primarily concerning teaching beginning programming courses. Dr. Califf"s current research projects involve applying pattern-based learning algorithms to natural language processing tasks and to genetic learning tasks such as determining protein structures.
