Founded in 1857, Illinois State University was the first public university in the state and its one of the Midwest's oldest institutions of higher education. It is a residential university with more than 20,000 students whose emphasis is on undergraduate study.

The College of Applied Science and Technology (CAST) is the second largest college on campus with more than 3,611 students in 42 majors. There are six departments and two schools in the College: the Departments of Agriculture; Criminal Justice Sciences; Health Sciences; Family and Consumer Sciences; Technology and Military Science, and the Schools of Information Technology and Kinesiology & Recreation.
